BBC Elstree
SDS London is proud to present one of our latest completed projects done by our specification team, BBC Elstree.

The refurbishment of BBC Elstree Studios required a technically robust ironmongery specification capable of meeting the rigorous standards of a live production environment. SDS London supplied and co-ordinated the door hardware to dressing room, production and office spaces, delivering a fully compliant solution.
The specification balanced fire performance, accessibility, and durability, integrating products tested to EN standards with the architectural and operational needs of the facility. The selection included maintenance-free hinges, high-use closers, Buster + Punch designed handles, and a fully co-ordinated hardware package. Through detailed scheduling and co-ordination, SDS London ensured that each component was compatible, certified, and visually consistent — demonstrating excellence in both technical delivery and specification integrity.
All hardware was specified to achieve the required performance criteria for fire, security, and accessibility. Door sets incorporated FD30 and FD60 assemblies, with intumescent fire packs supplied for locks, hinges and flush bolts ensuring every component was supplied in line with it’s fire certification.
Accessible WCs featured Lift-to-Lock privacy sets and 32 mm diameter satin stainless-steel grab rails, providing ease of operation and adhering to the best practice recommendations of Approved Document M and BS 8300. High-performance floor springs and slide-arm overhead closers delivered reliable control across busy circulation areas, complemented by Buster + Punch lever handles and Guardsman pull handles that added a refined industrial character consistent with the project’s contemporary design language.
Every element was selected for long-life service, low maintenance, and compliance with EN classification standards.

A consistent satin stainless-steel finish was chosen throughout to deliver a refined, contemporary aesthetic suitable for the modernised broadcast facility. The Buster + Punch Cross lever handle was a key design feature—its knurled detailing offering both tactile quality and visual distinction, echoing the industrial style of the studios while maintaining a professional finish.
Guardsman pull handles, kick plates, escutcheons and closers were co-ordinated in matching material and tone to ensure visual harmony across all functional zones. This attention to alignment of appearance resulted in an elegant yet hard-wearing specification that enhances the building’s design coherence and user experience.
Sustainability was addressed through material longevity, responsible sourcing and lifecycle performance. All major components were manufactured under ISO 14001 environmental management systems, with stainless-steel ironmongery offering full recyclability and minimal maintenance requirements.
Co-ordination at specification stage avoided over-ordering and site waste, while intumescent and mechanical elements were supplied in recyclable packaging. By using durable, mechanical hardware rather than electronic alternatives, energy consumption and embodied carbon were reduced. The focus on certified fire performance, accessible design, and long-term maintainability ensures the installation will continue to perform efficiently throughout the building’s life, supporting the BBC’s broader sustainability objectives.
