Polished Brass is highly polished and supplied with a protective clear lacquer to maintain it's shine. The lacquer is durable enough to last many years internally. However if the fittings are used externally such as front door furniture the lacquer will break down over time. Factors such as air quality, acid rain and costal erosion will reduce the lifetime of the lacquer. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The colour of brass is dependent on the content of copper in the brass, but it tends to have a muted yellow colour, somewhat similar to gold.
In order to maintain the polished appearance of the brass and keep a long lasting quality finish, regular dusting and an application of furniture wax should keep the lacquer looking good. It’s not advisable to use a cleaner or a polish, this will tarnish the lacquer.
Brass doesn’t corrode and it won’t stain any surface that it is fitted to. All the polished brass products we have for sale are made from solid brass and it’s worth noting that almost 90% of all brass alloys made today are recyclable.
